Improved Wiki editor

Posted by Andy Singleton on Thu, Dec 01, 2011 @ 12:10 PM

The Wiki has an improved WYSIWYG editor.  It will be familiar to many of our users because it comes from the Google Closure editor that is used in gmail.

The layout is simpler. There are fewer controls and fewer options.  You don't need "Preview", and the submit buttons are easy to find on the top and bottom right.

The edit form sizes itself to contain the entire page.  It expands as your page gets bigger. When you scroll down to the bottom of a large page, the formatting bar follows you.

We see better results when cutting and  pasting from other editors.

We improved image upload, so you can quickly add pictures. Click on the little square image upload icon and you get the following options:

  • Upload an image file.  It loads into the "Files" list and appears on your Wiki page.
  • Select a previously uploaded image.  You can select from thumbnails of the last 20 images, or you can search by name.
  • Size an image. Select small, medium, or large sizes to fit your page.

Do you think we should use this editor on the Ticket description panel?

So, this editor replaced not only the WYSIWYG editor but all previous editors? I mean, it doesn't appear you can switch editors now, except "new editor" or "previous WYSIWYG editor".

You can switch formats at the space level, by using the Settings link on the sidebar. We removed the ability to select new formats on each page, because it was confusing. It's UI was odd, since it doesn't submit the content. However, this format selection is still available on the edit form for other formats, like textile. Do you want us to put it the format selector back on the WYSIWYG editor? I suppose that we can hide it near the bottom.

I don't think I have access to the space settings for my org. I should be able to choose the format I like to edit in as an individual, not mandating preference for a group/org. I should be able to choose the format/editor in some manner; currently my only choices are "new" and "old WYSIWYG". Even if it took a couple of clicks to go from new->old->raw, that would be better than not having an option.

The new editor looks nice and the file upload is much easier to use than the old one but is this the final version? Or will there be improvements? (The old TinyMCE editor had a lot more features)

It seems like there's no good way to insert code snippets with the new editor, is that right?

I'd really like to see drag and drop uploading of files as well.

An image paste would be supremely useful.

In this so-called "new and better" editor I completely cannot edit the table, which was so easy in the last version.

To add/remove rows - is just impossible anymore.

So sad, I had to return to the previous version.

One of our goals was to reduce the number of features in the editor, and increase the usability and reliability of the features that are included. However, these are great suggestions.

We will release a code block control next week. We get requests and votes for that feature. It is currently in development.

I will experiment with the table editor and see if we need to enhance it.

I don't think that we will be able to implement image paste, with reliable cross-browser behavior. However, I think that we will be able to have drag and drop uploading, in the Files tool, and in related tools like WIki. We don't have a specific time to work on it, but we put the request in the backlog.

I'm constantly switching back to the previous TinyMCE editor to get the preformatted font. Can you add that one to the list in your next release?

I'm all for improvements in usability and reliability, but I do not favor reducing the number of features. I, too, find myself switching back to the TinyMCE editor to edit tables and have greater control of formatting.
