Release notes: More ticket filtering options

Posted by Andy Singleton on Sun, Jul 03, 2011 @ 12:34 PM

In our release earlier this week, we upgraded the filters on many of the Ticket views.  This will help multiple teams and individuals work with one ticket list, by allowing them to select their own views.

We added personal filters.  In the last release, only a project owner could save filters / reorts.  Now, any user can make and save personal filters or reports with the filter sidebar.  You have to select a checkbox to save as a shared filter, and this is only available to users with All/Owner permission.

We added report selector to the cardwall. So, you can filter by milestone, or by a report, so that you can see any set of selected tickets.  You can also open a filter in the right sidebar at any time to select a specific set of cards.  Please note that you must select by Milestone if you want to sort tickets by dragging them on the cardwall.

We added the sidebar filter to the Portfolio dashboard view and space metrics page, so that you can see counts and kill-rates for any selected set of tickets.  Use this in combination with the Space selector above to get the report that you want.

We added "group by story" to filters, and we also added a flag to select only stories or tasks.

We added an option to show story/task hierarchy in the Agile Planner milestone column.  You can select "Show subtasks in Milestones" on top, and you will see that stories you get an arrow to open tickets in hte Milestone columnn and show the hierarchy of tasks.

We have started working on estimates by adding a ticket field for total estimated effort.  You can reveal the estimates by going to the bottom of the ticket settings page, and selecting one of the options:

  • Do not show estimated effort (default)
  • Show estimated total time (for projects that want to estimate time)
  • Show estimated total points (for projects that use points)
  • Estimate as Small / Medium / Large (this is my favorite.  It's easy, it's good enough, and we can show it graphically with small/medium/large icons)

To finish the estimating feature, we will improve the data entry, and show the total estimates on reports, in the Planner, on cardwall columns, etc.  Then, you will be able to make estimates for features and milestones, and track velocity.

Personal custom filters are great news!

The CardWall is getting better, but it's not obvious how it works with the Group and Sorting options. Need to play some more here, maybe it's just me.

The Story option in filters is also most welcome.

Thanks!

The new Estimation option with its Small/Medium/Large choices becomes a _mandatory_ field as soon as it's enabled. Its default value is Small. This doesn't work well, since most of the time the tickets are created by users who have no idea what the effort is.

The Estimation feature is a good addition and I am looking forward to adding it to our workflow, but right now it's flawed.

Should there be a default "none"?

Yes, a <none> option is a must.

After rereading the update for a 4th time. I stumbled upon the word side bar. I finally figured out what and where this was. It is not obvious that there is even anything there. Especially for someone use to the image that is being used. It appears as a record selector field that I am use to seeing on front ends.
You might want to modify this or even put a note above the side bar that it is even there.
