Manage your tickets with the iPhone Tickets app from Butterfly Avionics

Posted by Andy Singleton on Wed, Dec 23, 2009 @ 12:28 PM

At Assembla we manage everything with tickets, so we were very happy to see the new Assembla Tickets iPhone application, from Butterfly Avionics. It gives you the ability to view and edit your tickets on the fly.

This application keeps your work on track.

The opening screen cleverly notes while loading that "the longer it takes, the more work you have" and loads your complete list of projects.  I have about 100, but most people have a short list that flashes up quickly.
On the next screen you select the space or project that you want to work on.

Finally select a filter that you want to view.  Now you see the list of tickets.

The application will display the tickets with a nice status indicator on the left hand side.  Select any ticket to get a full-page display, edit, and comment.  Select + on top to add a ticket.

The iPhone application uses the Assembla REST API (link here)Get it for $11.99 on the iPhone app store.

just bought the iPhone app - works great.
so I got perfect mobile integration.

only the integration with Eclipse Mylyn has a bug: I don't see the custom fields correct.

per ex. my field "Component" appears in Mylyn editor, but instead of the name "my_component" there's only an int displayed. this makes the integration worthless because I have to set the Component later on the web for all new Tickets.

adition to my last comment:

the Mylyn Integration has a problem to select a Component - only an int value was displayed at Mylyn editor. (customizes Milestones work well)

the iPhone app lets select both fields correctly from customized values: Milestones and Components.

but the iPhone app AND the Assembla Mylyn integration both dont display any added custom fields

Hi,

I am a pro assembla customer - paying my subscription for myself and my developers - why then is this app not free?

Nice idea, though

Android OS support? Anyone?

I was going to have own my my sub-contractors build me an iPhone or mobile web interface on top of the REST API until I saw this app. I was very excited at first and started looking at the app and then bought it.

Now, I always get annoyed to see people complaining in iPhone app reviews about how they had to pay a whopping 99 cents for an app that has a lot of features. I mean, come on... its 99 CENTS!!!! Some people are just getting too entitled and expect everything for free on the web now.

In this case, I do feel like I paid too much. This app only allows you to manage tickets. Thats it. I can do that at the same speed via safari on my iPhone... I did it the other day when I didn't have quick access to wifi so had to use 3G.

So I feel I paid $12 for something that only lets me manage tickets and thats it. I can't manage milestones (which I need to do often). I can't get a dashboard type view of time spent on date ranges to keep track of billing I need to do.

I'm kind of hoping that since I spent the $12 I basically bought into the app early and I hope there will be lots of features added over time. But now I am skeptical because the app *is* called "Assembla Tickets" so its scope seems to be limited.

Hmmmm... maybe I will get a truly useful Assembla iPhone app after all and start selling it at 1/2 the price to undercut the competition. Hmmmmm.

I think this really is a no-brainer.

Any service that charges a subscription should not charge extra to view that service in a different format. That is entirely the point in paying a subscription charge - particularly when that new format is nowhere near as useful.

The no-brainer in my view is all subscription paying customers should get all features included in the price (or at the very least, have pricing plans so the more subscription you pay, the more features you get). Any non-fee paying customer, in my view, should be able to get a 'lite' version of new formats for free or pay to have the pro version.

That's a standard model which has worked for years and continues to work well. When a company steps outside that model, customers (in my view) rightly put their backs up.

Chris: assembla did not make the iPhone app. It is made by another company so in that sense I do agree that other company has a right to charge a fee for the iPhone app for their work. Assembla simply enables external development by providing their REST API (which i'm glad they do).

But the fact still remains in my view that the iPhone app is just not all that great. When I discovered that I can't manage milestones on the app, I quickly logged into the website on my laptop this morning, to add an empty milestone so I could create tickets using the app later in the day. Well, lo and behold there is a bug that empty milestones with no tickets don't show up in the app! :-( So I still had to jump out to safari to create a fake ticket, and only then did the iPhone app become a little useful.

The iPhone app has a LONG way to go to being truly useful.

Ah,

Then please do accept my apologies. I use assembla pretty much every day and i sincerely think it's great - so i was really surprised when this app came out and there was a fee for it - considering a) the not so great functionality, and b) if it were assembla making it - it's way over priced!

Hugs and kissed... can we make up Assembla ? :)

yes, the assembla iPhone app has a long ways to go. It doesn't save state... I was just in the middle of using it to enter a lengthy ticket description. Right as I went to tap "Save" button another app sent a push notification with a "View" button and so I ended up accidentally tapping View. That took me out of the assembla app and *poof* all my typing was lost.

I don't mind paying $12 for an iPhone app as long as its full featured and reliable but this assembla iPhone app is just not ready for prime time and is beyond frustrating.

Recommendation: do not buy and wait for the app to go through some more releases.

I use the app almost every day for about a week now. It lets me manage my tickets in an easy to use user interface. Not more and not less than i expected from the description. The price could be cheaper (as everything ;)) and integration of custom fields would be great, but instead of accessing my tickets on the go in my mobile safari, it's much more comfortable to use the app.
